Virtual Summer Academy
Summer Academy Classes
Youth will learn the basics of chess for the purposes of stimulating the mind. The game will be learned and played virtually, however, each youth will receive a chess board game to teach others how to play chess.
Youth will learn the basics of coding and create a foundational understanding of computer science.
Youth will engage in contemporary and hip hop dance with Celebrity Choreographer FatimaYana utilizing songs that build on social justice and stimulate reflection to assist youth in taking a stand to become change agents.
CHOYCES provides an opportunity to educate the youth about financial literacy and accountability through the fun of playing games like Monopoly, The Stock Exchange Game, and ACT Your Wage. This ensures and promotes creative methods to learn about how to save and spend finances, along with being cognizant about debt. This encourages thoughtfulness about the daily living expenses for every family member!
This science class includes science experiences allowing youth the opportunity to be scientists. They will participate in day-to-day experiments that allow them to obtain conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. CHOYCES will teach them about famous scientists that look and act like them. We will also provide kits to further develop their sense of inquiry related to science and nature. Classes include Robotics, Energy and Electricity, and Chemistry
We Can All Be Heroes
Youth will engage in art techniques that will provide them with a finished art piece of their own. Some of the classes include digital art, painting with a twist for kids, graphic design, etc.
Youth will engage in book talks utilizing books such as: “Let the Children March,” Same, Same but Different,” “Dear Martin” and “The House on Mango Street”
Youth will learn the basics of videography, film making and editing. Youth will come up with a social justice campaign they are interested in and create a video to bring awareness. Campaign videos will be posted on the CHOYCES website, youtube and other social media platforms.
Full Summer Academy
Students get to attend all 48 classes for the entire 3 weeks and get to keep all the material they received while at the summer academy.
Students get to attend one week of the summer academy and would be able to go to 16 classes and keep all the material they get that specific week.
